The Bay Hammock Company incorporated on November 4th, 2004. Archie and Anne Chisholm arrived in Nova Scotia in 2003 after they retired from successful careers in Ontario. Archie worked for the Ford Motor Co. in St Thomas, Ontario for 30 years. Anne owned a retail coffee roaster and café company in Ontario. When she sold the company in 2003, it had two roaster cafés and was the largest independent buyer of coffee beans in Ontario. Archie and Anne's goal is to operate Bay Hammock Company in order to stay active and involved in their new community. They took on the venture to learn new things and develop new ideas.
The vision of The Bay Hammock Company is to become the largest manufacturer and exporter of hammocks in Canada. They feel that their focus on quality and using traditional skills of net-weaving will be instrumental to their success. The major markets are in Canada and the US but they hope eventually to establish a strong market in Europe.
The company employs one onsite weaver, one offsite sewer and three off- site weavers. Bay Hammocks produces hand-made rope hammocks and chairs. These products are sold at the store, through wholesale channels of other retailers, and on the internet. The rope Hammocks come in several sizes, models and colours. But overall, they are considered the high end of a range of different hammock products.
The company also produces custom fabric hammocks and they have recently introduced a line of hammock chairs. They have also been looking closely at a new product known as shade sails.
