Amos Pewter designs and handcrafts pewter gifts and keepsakes in an open studio located in Mahone Bay on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. A second location on the waterfront in Halifax, Nova Scotia opened in the spring of 2010. Our artisans began making pewter gifts and keepsakes in 1974 in the vacant boat building shop (circa 1880) in Mahone Bay that houses the workshop today. At Amos Pewter, designers and craftspeople put the spotlight on the skills and techniques that have been used by pewter makers for decades. Our skilled staff knows the value of quality craftsmanship and will take the time to help customers recognize the hallmarks of quality workmanship.
In the early days, Amos artisans enjoyed engaging in conversation about their craft with people who visited. From those modest beginnings, they have created a year-round tourism based business, linked to the history and craft of pewter-making, innovative design, their coastal environment, and the very best in customer service. Amos Pewter was the first artisan shop in Nova Scotia to join the ECONOMUSEE Network.
Today, the workshop within the store is designed so that customers can interact with craftspeople. Molten pewter is cast into jewelry, picture frames and ornaments. Pewter discs are spun on a lathe into vases and candlesticks. Exhibits and interpretive panels tell the story of pewter. Careful renovation has preserved the historical character of the original building.
